Ok, ok! I was propelled to see "Think Like A Man" this evening from the same force that propels me to watch any reality show with a Black cast. I was honestly prepared to dislike the movie based on having read the book (thru my book club) and my "meh" feelings about
Steve Harvey. BUT, surprisingly enough, I enjoyed the flick and ended up being thoroughly entertained with literal LOL moments to boot.
The Good The Excellent
- Michael Ealy. He is simply beautiful and I would pay admission to watch him do nothing for infinity. His stunning looks aside, he's also a good actor and along with Taraji Henson brought something for the grown folks in the audience.
The Good
- All the Black actors and actresses that were employed as a result of this film. Big up to Regina Hall. Why don't we see more of her? There were some notable cameos, Taraji's ex flame and Kevin Hart's wife. The theater reacted strongly (in a good way) to both.
- Kevin Hart.
- Lala Anthony played Megan Good's best friend and... good job, La!
- I, typically don't like Gabrielle Union (I don't know why, she just doesn't do it for me) BUT, I wasn't as bothered by her in this film. I think it was helpful that a) she wasn't on too long and b) she moved away from playing the role that she's usually been cast in (which I think went to Taraji this time around -- very professional/highly educated, single, independent, wealthy, etc...)
- As a result of Michael / Taraji's scenes, that John Legend song "Tonight (Best You Ever Had) is now emblazoned in my mind and will be bumped at ridiculous levels for the next several days.
- Minimal Steve Harvey.
- Where did my like for Terrence J come from? He snuck up on me!
- The trailer for Sparkle! The trailer for a new Total Recall w/Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale AND Bokeem Woodbine!!!
- Does Megan Good have the most perfectly shaped lips in life? Sheesh?
The Bad / The Annoying
- Here we go again. The token white friends (there were no Brothers in "The Hangover" crew. #justsaying). I wasn't bothered by Jerry Ferrara because he was in a relationship with Gabrielle Union's character. But Gary Owen? Why was he there? In my opinion, he served up some unfunny/borderline racist lines and was used to school everyone else in order to show the model of "perfect" relationship. Arrrrrgggghhhh. *long sigh*
- Disappointed that none of the main female leads were larger than a size 4.
- The story did okay on the "Act Like A Lady" part, but fell down on how to "Think Like A Man". But the fact that it didn't stick closely to the book, is probably why I like it so much.
Overall, I give it a 9 out of 10. Did you see the movie? What are your thoughts?
Omg I had these same reactions! Finally a role that I like Gabrielle Union in; kudos o my girll Lala; Micheal Ealy...just kiss me once! Taraji, u are my chick but stop hogging my Michael but thank u for making me love that John Legend track, Kevin hart hilarious; Gary Owen, good to see again, Regina Hall and Jenifer Lewis, love love love; Terrance J...really? I think I just became a fan sir, great job.....all in all, I love it and will buy the dvd
ReplyDeleteI loved the movie and glad it is going to come in number 1.
ReplyDeleteTerrance J (NC STAND UP) acting skills have greatly improved. Same can be said for Megan Good. Gabby was the same her fav role of mine is in C. Records when she was Columbus Short's wife-pretty girl not my fav actress. I didn't think she had any chemistry with the YT dude either.
I feel sorry for everybody who is boycotting the movie cause its based on Steve Harvey's book, they are going to miss out on a GREAT movie.
Not all black women are thick (I am a 4/6) so I wasn't bothered by the size of the women in the movie cause they still talked about loving a phat azz all the same.
Kevin Hart is a FOOL!
Thanks for the comments, ladies!
ReplyDeleteDaisy - Right, not all Black women are thick. But there was not one thick Sista represented. Not one Jill Scott, Octavia Spencer, etc... body type.
I just saw this film, but wanted to share my thoughts-it was surprisingly great. (I say surprisingly bec. my expectations were not that high considering the more recent Black films that have hit the theater).
ReplyDeleteAs for your review, I am in agreement with most of your points. The only thing is-Gary Owen didn't bother me because I liked that he & Kevin Hart were the 2 bookends since they are such opposites physically. But your point about the Hangover is well taken.
Also, my only nit picking thing is, I wish at least one of the women didn't have to be wearing chemically straightened/artificially lengthened hair. I'm not even natural, but when there's a film with such beautiful Black sisters, it felt a bit...sad? daunting? that none of us could have had our hair in its natural texture and still be mainstream.
Anyway, GREAT film. I was also really, really surprised at how much I liked Terrrence J, but the real winner for me was Romany Malco. I hope this guy gets a great boost from this, because I think he was superb. His singing voice was even beautiful (if that was his). Taraji & michael were obviously the attractive, main couple. But Romany & Meagan Goode really ended up being my faves. Well done all.
